About the Languedoc region:
The Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, in
which our holiday home is situated, is the fastest-growing area of the
country. It offers hundreds of kilometres of sandy beaches, beautiful
rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see (it is France’s
largest wine-producing region), and huge numbers of historical sights -
from dramatic castle ruins to beautiful abbeys and roman ruins. In
Carcassonne you’ll find the world’s largest medieval castle
- La Cité, not far from the beautiful tree-lined Canal du Midi.
Just south are the Cathar Castle ruins - perched on rocky outcrops with
spectacular views of the Pyrénées and the Mediterranean.
In Nîmes you’ll find the Maison Carée Roman temple
and the Les Arènes roman amphitheatre. and just north of that
the Pont du Gard - the world’s largest roman aqueduct. All along
the coast, you can enjoy superb seafood in the many fishing villages
and towns such as Bouzigues, Sète, Collioure and Gruissan.
The weather is hot and sunny - with over 300 days
of sunshine a year. That makes it the perfect climate for wine - the
region’s wine domains dot the landscape, producing deliciously
fruity reds and whites such as Picpoul de Pinet and Viognier. You can
pop into almost any of these to taste their wines, or enjoy them in the
region’s excellent local restaurants, many of which offer outdoor
seating in leafy squares.
Getting to our holiday home in the Languedoc is
easy and inexpensive. The Ramparts gîte is only 30 minutes from
Béziers airport, and also within 90 minutes of the airports of
Montpellier, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Nîmes, Avignon and Girona in
Spain (flights by RyanAir, FlyBe and British Airways, amongst others.)
